SILMETRIC ® provides technical assistance for the realisation of products intended for use in safety systems, such as performing hardware reliability analyses, defining lifecycle documents and the additional quality management system requirements. Critical aspects such as capturing requirements, architectural and detailed design, verification and validation, traceability and configuration management are all areas that the standards deal with. Some of these requirements can be quite challenging to comply with and SILMETRIC can advise on the best course of action.
Reliability models for safety devices are typically created by a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), together with an evaluation of the systematic and common cause failures. This establishes the hardware reliability data needed to base a claim of suitability for use in safety functions specified with a SIL, or a Performance Level (PL).
Another important area we can assist with is how to meet the systematic integrity requirements for the SIL involved (SC 1-3). Finally, we can advise how best to document and publish the information in datasheets and safety manuals.
